Beth Doyle, Curator at The Panacea Museum (Unlocking Bedford’s Singular Religious Past)

The Panacea Museum is a unique aspect of Bedford’s religious history The museum tells the story of The Panacea Society. A religious community formed in that early 20th century around Mabel Barltrop, who some agreed was daughter as God and should be head of a new Religious order. The society drew in followers from all over the UK and beyond, which Bedford was at the heart of their spiritual and communal life.

This is housed in the original headquarters of the Panacea Society, a pretty Edwardian house that has been left as it looked when this strange religious cult, founded by Mabel Barltrop and expecting Christ to return before 1920, existed. They document the history of the society, its beliefs and how it has effected on a local community.
